God With Us

Jesus Is

In John 3, Jesus teaches Nicodemus that “this is the verdict, that the light has come into the world, and people loved darkness rather than light.” Jesus, the light, has come into the world, and still we choose to ignore it all the time, preferring darkness, even at our own expense, to the light. We’re convinced that it’s easier to choose other things over Jesus, and in some ways maybe it is because when we move into the light, everything is exposed and there’s nowhere to hide. If we had to get our lives in order before God would do anything for us, then Jesus coming would make no sense. But God put on flesh and pitched a tent among us before we had it all together. God already knows all of your flaws and sent his Son into the world for you, for all of us, anyway. Jesus, in becoming human, showed us how to be fully human, walking in the light. It’s not as though we’re in a pit and someone has lowered a rope to drag us out. No, Jesus is God who put on flesh and moved into our neighborhood – Jesus lowered himself into the pit in order to hoist us out, if we would only let him. Will we choose to walk in the light or continue to wander in darkness?
