Leaders & Followers

Summary

Are you a leader or a follower? I’ll give you a hint. The answer is yes. As followers of Jesus, we are all called to use the unique gifts God has given us to lead others to Jesus Christ. The Apostle Paul, in his letter to the church in Ephesus, wrote, “Live a life worthy of the calling you have received.” We’re tempted to twist his words to imply that we have to live a certain way to earn God’s love. That’s not the point at all. Instead, we are called to live, literally to walk, in response to what God has already done for us in Jesus Christ. My salvation is not only for me. My gifts are not only for me. They are to be put to use to point to Christ. If I think that what God has given me is only for me and I refuse to put my gifts to use to lead others toward Christ, then I’ve made an idol of myself. When we all put our unique gifts to use, responding to Christ and pointing to Christ, then we all experience more of the fullness of Christ. There is not some magical milestone of readiness that we have to reach before we begin to lead. Jesus, from “all authority on heaven and earth” (Matthew 28:18) that was given to him, empowers us to “go and make disciples of all nations” (Matthew 28:19), to make learners, to lead. So, are you a leader or a follower? Yes! The better question is “who?”
