Wine and Whip

Missional Series

It isn’t about the wine. It isn’t about the whip. What does Jesus do? He shows up in real life; he takes something normal and replaces it with something extraordinary – the best! “Everyone brings out the choice wine first and then the cheaper wine after the guests have had too much to drink; but you have saved the best until now (John 2:10)”. He takes something legalistically religious – the temple with its “marketplace” systems, and he replaces it with himself. “Destroy this temple, and I will raise it again in three days (John 2:19).” Throughout John, Jesus’ miracles are called “signs.” They all point us to who Jesus is and what’s to come. The life and ministry and the death and resurrection of Jesus are all of the same character and quality – “full of grace and truth (John 1:14).”
